The DMC (Direct Mud Circulation) method utilizes bentonite slurry to stabilize the walls of a borehole while drilling. Bentonite clay mixed with water creates a hydrostatic pressure that prevents soft, sandy sides from caving in before the pile concrete can be firmly cast.
A dedicated mixing tank prepares the bentonite suspension. This pressurized mud is continually pumped into the borehole through hollow drill rods.
As the drill bit breaks the earth, the mud carries the cuttings up to the surface. The mud forms a 'filter cake' on the borehole walls, sealing it against collapse.
Concrete is pumped using a Tremie pipe starting from the very bottom. Being significantly heavier, the concrete rises, pushing the lighter bentonite slurry out to the surface to be recycled.
